Joe the Plumber goes mobile, almost

I was impressed when my plumbing guy whipped out his mobile device to give me an instant estimate on the new part needed to fix my plumbing problem, and even printed a trip-fee invoice from his handheld. But one huge mistake let competitors in.

The company’s Motorola MC9000 devices with O’Neil mobile printers got these guys SO close! Then I asked for a price on a new system, and the technician pulled out a pocket-sized notepad of phone numbers for his sales guys. What do you think I did next? Paid him for his trip and then had plenty of time to call not only his sales team, but also four of his rivals.

Joe would’ve made a deal on that new system right there in my living room if his company had added a simple application to his device, to integrate a phone directory, real-time pricing and available discounts. Now who do you think is getting the business?
